Aht’Wy Plaza Interchange Project – Nez Perce Tribe ~
Aht’Wy Plaza Interchange Project – Nez Perce Tribe
Aht’Wy Plaza is a Nez Perce Tribe development along U.S. Highway 95/12, approximately four miles east of Lewiston. The 33-acre property is currently developed as the Clearwater River Casino and Resort, along with a fueling station. Two approaches onto U.S. Highway 95/12, a four-lane divided highway, serve the property and adjacent residents. Access safety and delays have been a major issue since the casino opened in 1996. Several accidents and fatalities have occurred at the intersections over the years. The Nez Perce Tribe, after working with other firms for the improvements, turned to Riedesel Engineering to assist them with developing a grade separated interchange (overpass) to access the Plaza from U.S. Highway 95/12.
The Project consisted of three phases:
Phase 1:
-
Public Involvement, including the formation of an Advisory Committee and public meetings, developing alternatives for the location of the interchange, an Environmental Assessment for the project, and project concept approval
Phase 2:
-
Preliminary and Final design plans
Phase 3:
-
Construction of the improvements
The Tribe and Idaho Transportation Department desire to have the project completed as soon as possible. The project is complex in that the Clearwater River is adjacent to the highway on the south side, along with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers designated wildlife habitat land.
